FAQs

How do I know that what I talk about in session is confidential?

By law and my personal ethics, what is talked about in session is confidential, with very few exceptions. I am required to intervene or take action if I have a reason to believe that a person may harm themselves or others. I am also required to report any concerns about child abuse to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. On rare occasions, I may receive a court subpoena to provide medical records. In Illinois, clients age 12 and older have the right to confidentiality even from their parents if they request it. Again, the exceptions to this would be if I had concerns that the client was in danger of hurting themselves or someone else, if I suspect child abuse may be occurring or if I have received a court subpoena for medical records.
